Thought For the Day

TGIF.

No, just kidding. Well, not really, but that's not the thought for the day. : )

My datebook has quotes on some pages, and there was one that I really liked this week.

Without further ado:

"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee." (Marion Wright Edelman)

This is something I think is really important to remember. I confess- when I hear about some of the remarkable things people are doing in the world, I am first impressed, and second, intimidated. People are doing BIG things. And I sometimes feel like, as much as I want to make my world better, I'm not sure where to start with these big things. Do I have to quit my life as I know it and move far away and remake myself into a sage or a hero?

And then I catch myself and I laugh, because I'm running amuck in my imagination again.

I don't live in my imagination, though. I live here, in reality. And here, big things are nothing more than the sum of little things.

So I guess I should smile at someone. Offer up my seat. The next time I ask somebody how they are, I'm going to stop, look them in the eyes, and listen to their answer. I'm going to make the world better in a little way as often as I can, and maybe all the little things will grow into something big. : )
